Mary Lorna Bryson was born in Oban 1948. In 1968 she moved to Dundee where she studied illustration at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art successfully completing her degree course The high standard she achieved in her subject led to an offer of a further year’s study and she was awarded a Post Graduate Diploma. It was during her time at college that she met and subsequently married fellow artist Ian (Scoop) Bryson. They settled in Dundee where Scoop worked as a full time painter while Lorna pursued a career teaching art at schools including Menzieshill High School, Grove Academy, and St John's High School. She was a Scottish Secondary Schools Teachers Association (SSTA) representative at Regional and National level and from 1987 Convener of the Regional Art Panel for Tayside. In 1992 she retired early from teaching to continue her career as a freelance artist. Lorna had a quiet self-confidence and was a committed artist and excellent typographer. Known for her superb watercolours and gouache she accepted commissions from, amongst others, IPC Magazines, Valentines of Dundee, Prism Press and the RSPB. Following the death of her husband Scoop in 1997 she devoted more time developing new ideas using text and type and working with various innovative artists’ groups in Dundee. In 1998 she collaborated with Willie Clark for 'Radar', the first exhibition of the Dundee based artist group Generator Projects. Lorna began working at The Queen’s Gallery in 1999 having been asked to “help out” at the inaugural exhibition. She became a loyal and valued assistant and continued to work and contribute to the gallery for the rest of her life. At the Roseangle Gallery in Dundee in 2001 Lorna exhibited in 'Women's Work' where artists were given a coffin to transform into an individual piece. Her poetic interpretation using text created a work of great complexity and depth. Lorna Bryson died on 11th July 2008 and her wish that this coffin be used for her final ceremony was granted. She is survived by her daughter Simone, her sister Fiona Kydd and her partner Willie Clark. Her work is held in public and private collections worldwide.
