EALANTA LOCH ABAIR

Ealanta Loch Abair is a collective of ten professional visual artists working and living in Lochaber in the heart of the West Highlands of Scotland.

Ealanta Loch Abair, meaning ‘Creative Lochaber’, aims to showcase the variety of work created there, drawing not only on the landscapes but on the riches of the natural world, folklore and tradition, with which Lochaber is wonderfully endowed.

This group of artists believe that working together to promote each other’s work will enable more people to see and appreciate its many diverse qualities, the range and energy of the work being testament to a vibrant community.

Ealanta Loch Abair involves a range of interpretations of regional life over a broad spectrum of media and subject matter.

Each artist has his/her own style.
David Wilson and Andrew Stewart both capture the majesty of the surroundings and their often tumultuous skies while Anna Raven explores the moods of the country through bold shapes and colours. Alan B. Hayman’s paintings document the thriving abundance of local wildlife and John Hodgson, a wood turner, takes the physical beauty of locally sourced wood to create sculptural forms.

Jamie Hageman’s work is an example of photographic realism. As an experienced mountaineer, his paintings describe seldom visited viewpoints and show the different facets of well-known peaks.

Delving deeper into the customs and traditions of local culture, artists such as Andrew Sinclair, Gail Wendorf, Alistair Smyth and James McCallum, individually explore the human aspects of life in the West Highlands. Andrew Sinclair’s chiaroscuro dramatisations bring to life past encounters with unique individuals and characters of the area.

Gail Wendorf, who is also inspired by the region’s people, recreates the intimate and atmospheric scenes of pub lock-ins and musical jam sessions. Alistair Smyth’s illustrative work retells historic stories and
anecdotes from the West Highlands and James McCallum creates paintings exploring the essential essence of the human condition with its varied cultures and civilizations.
